Keynote Speaker - Millisa C. Thomas

Mellisa ThomasMillisa C. Thomas, author of Can You Keep a Secret? and Look For The Miracle In All Things and Other Poems is a woman who knows and understands what it means to have soul wrenching questions. A survivor of childhood sexual and physical abuse, Ms. Thomas seeks to tap into the minds of fellow survivors and encourage each and every one, who is daring, to begin to speak out and give voice to dormant anger and frustration. Ms. Thomas has experienced the relief that comes with expressing deep-seeded rage and pain and invites you to look for miracles that surround each of us each day. Surviving any kind of trauma is a miracle. Telling about the trauma is a victory that deserves to be celebrated. Above all else, know that no experience, whether good or bad, will ever be wasted or experienced in vain. Each experience is a tool that will be used to carry out your destiny.

At seventeen years of age, and after giving birth to her stepfather’s second child, Ms. Thomas realized that the only way of escape for her would come by way of learning a skill so that she would have a means of supporting herself. She was not certain when she would ever be set free from her perpetual prison but she felt she needed to be ready. She attended Watterson College in West Covina, CA and graduated as class Salutatorian with a diploma as a Medical Assistant. One month after graduation she was hired by Dr. Marvin V. Snell to work as a medical assistant in his urgent care center, Inland Medical Center, in Pomona, CA. She worked for Dr. Snell for nearly eight years. It was during that time that the Snells sensed that something was horribly wrong. Their intuition was correct. After two suicide attempts Ms. Thomas revealed to the Snells the painful secret of her victimization at the hands of her stepfather. With the help of the Snells, and an incredible inner desire to escape the hellish prison, Ms. Thomas was able to tell her story to a La Verne police detective. After fifteen years of being held captive and enduring the rapes and physical abuse perpetrated by her stepfather; and experiencing the emotional betrayal and neglect of her mother, Ms. Thomas was finally free. It was now time for an intense season of healing. Ms. Thomas was able to receive counseling for several years and has worked diligently at becoming whole and living a life that resonates with healing and freedom from shame. She went on to enjoy a 22-year long career in the medical field and has touched and has been touched by countless numbers of genuine souls.
